Update: Cause of house fire near ECU determined

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Fire investigators have determined the cause of a fire outside a home near ECU.

Greenville Fire Investigator Patrick Dunn tells 9 On Your Side that the improper disposal of smoking materials caused the fire outside the home. None of the renters were home when the fire started. The home has minor smoke damage inside.

A house on East 3rd and Summit Street caught fire.

Firefighters worked to put out the fire at a house on 209 Summit Street in Greenville.

Witnesses tell us a passerby saw the fire, ran up to the front door and told the people inside.

Four female East Carolina University students live there; two were inside the house at the time. They tell us they didn't smell or see any smoke.

Firefighters and emergency crews tell us nobody is hurt.

Investigators on scene trying to determine cause.
