RALEIGH, N.C. -

Wake County interim superintendent Stephen Gainey is leaving to be the superintendent of Randolph County schools.

"I started working at the Wake County Public School System 20 years ago as a math teacher and coach," Gainey said in a statement. "Working with Wake County's students, educators, staff, and other professionals has been tremendously rewarding."

Gainey will start July 1 and make $165,000, according to the High Point Enterprise.

Gainey has run the Wake County Public School System since Tony Tata was fired. Wake is still searching for a replacement.

He is a former math teacher at Apex High School who worked his way up to eventually being principal at Leesville Road High.
