Father abandons 3 children after Beaufort County car chase

WASHINGTON, N.C. -

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office found three young children in a SUV after the driver ran away after not stopping in a traffic stop.

Deputies originally attempted to pull the SUV over after it was traveling on Highway 264 west of Washington. The car hit the median while turning onto Flanders Filters Road. A car chase began after the SUV didn't stop and sped away. Deputies say the vehicle was driving recklessly through large pot holes after it turned onto Oscar Lane. The driver drove behind a house and jumped out of the car while it was still moving. After chasing the driver into the woods, deputies began investigating the SUV with the children still inside.

Witnesses observed the driver jump from the car and run into the woods before the SUV had stopped. The children in the SUV were returned to their mothers. Deputies were able to contact the suspect while he was in the woods. He then turned himself in.

The sheriff's office arrested Shykeen Moore of Washington and charged him with felony flee to elude arrest, resisting an officer, DWI, and driving while license revoked. Moore was booked in the Beaufort county Detention Center under a $20,000 bond.

The Department of Social Services has been contacted about the incident.
