Craven County man jailed, victim in serious condition after bar attack

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -

A Craven County man is behind bars for assault and drug possession after a vicious bar attack.

The Emerald Isle Police Department says they arrested 33-year-old Michael Shane Harper after an assault at Paddy's Pub in Emerald Isle.

Officers say they found 26-year-old Adam David Claxton knocked out. They say he'd been assaulted by Harper while he was shooting pool and the attack was unprovoked.

Claxton was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for multiple head fractures and trauma. He's in serious condition.

Police later caught up with Harper, who they say was driving while impaired with an open container of alcohol.

During a traffic stop and subsequent search they found 8 grams of Methamphetamine, 7 grams of Psilocybin Mushrooms and 9 grams of Marijuana in addition to various drug paraphernalia and $3000.00 in cash.

Harper was charged with numerous offenses, including Assault inflicting serious injury, Driving While Impaired, and Open Container after Consuming.

He was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $101,500 bond.
