A Chapel Hill church is banding together to help the family of one of their own.

Last Friday morning, Doval Watson and his wife were on board a bus acting as chaperones for local kids who were going to tour Hampton University.

The bus crashed and Doval Watson was killed while his wife Theresa was seriously injured.

Now, the church they were members at is trying to be there for the family of a man who they say would do anything for anyone.

"If there was something to be done, he was willing to do it and did it with a smile," said Faye Farrar, a parishioner at St. Paul's AME church.

It was a smile that members of St. Paul's were deprived of yesterday.

"I kept looking around for him," said fellow parishioner Ruth Johnson.

"It was just a sad day on Sunday because he and Theresa sat right here; they were supposed to be here," said Johnson pointing to the pew the husband and wife traditionally occupied.

When Doval wasn't sitting there, he was sitting in the front of the church, playing the drums at service, but that's not all he did.

"He made many contributions and served in many capacities on many projects," explained Faye Farrar.

Whether it was building a home for Habitat for Humanity, running in a church fundraiser or many other activities Doval Watson stood out.

"He was a very quiet leader," said fellow parishioner Carolyn Perry. "He didn't push his weight around or anything…people would follow him if something need to be done."

His wife Theresa survived the crash after sustaining serious injuries.

"It's going to be hard for her," said fellow parishioner Anissa McClendon. "They were the backbone for each other for so many years. She had a lot of projects and (so) did he, but they always worked together."

Now the St. Paul's Church community is going to wrap Theresa Watson in their embrace.

"She's going to need lots of support; spiritually, mentally and physically," said Carolyn Perry. "If we continue to hold her up in that way, she'll be fine."
