SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

A Smithfield man told Johnston County deputies as he lay dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound that he shot his drug dealer for making him a "crack head," according to a search warrant.

Craig Baker called 911 April 5 to report a murder-suicide at a residence on Hillcrest Road in Smithfield.

The search warrant says when deputies arrived at the address, they found 32-year-old Lucas Lorenzo Benton dead in the front yard by a car. Deputies found an injured Baker laying on the floor of a utility trailer in front of the residence.

Deputies began to administer first aid to Baker when he said he shot Benton for being a drug dealer and making Baker an addict. Baker also told deputies that he did not owe Benton any money, according to the affidavit.

"I shot him, then I shot myself, I need to leave," a responding deputy quoted Baker as saying.

Baker was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 2:45 p.m.

According to the search warrant, crack cocaine was found beside the body of Benton.
