Pamlico man told to clean up illegal dump

BAYBORO, N.C. -

Clean it up or face thousands in fines.

That's the message health officials are sending a man they say is illegally dumping and burning chemicals and waste on his property.

Pamlico County Health Director, Dennis Harrington, tells 9 On Your Side the illegal landfill is about 18 feet tall and 1,000 feet long.

Harrington says the property owner, Phillip Willis, will most likely have 30-to-45 days to properly clean up the site. If he doesn't clean it up by then, he could have to pay $15,000 a day until he does.

Willis also runs a septic business in town.

The Division of Waste Management is now investigating.
