WAKE FOREST, N.C. -

Building your dream home for retirement is a dream for many. And for the Ford family, that dream became a nightmare.

Carietta and David Ford decided to retire from New York to Wake Forest. They hired a builder and their custom-built home was a year in the making.

But now the Fords are homeless.

The Fords say the builder decided to terminate their contract just before closing. The builder then listed the home as for sale, asking $35,000 more that what the Fords agreed to pay.

"They just took the house away from us," Carietta Ford said.

David Ford said, "I told my wife this is like our baby. This house started out like our baby and at completion, they just took my baby away from us."

WNCN Investigates did some digging and found this is not an isolated incident.
