Elementary school students participate in "Battle of the Books" competition

Posted: Updated:

Elementary students battled it out today.
Saint James Methodist Church hosted 10 elementary schools for the Pitt County "Battle of the Books" competition.
After months of reading from a list of previously selected books, teams went against each other in a quiz bowl competition.
Ridgewood and Elmhurst were tied going into the last round for a nail biter but Elmhurst pulled out the win!

"All the books are award winners so they're great books to read and if we can expose them to that literature in a way that engages them to want to read more that's a great thing," said Tim DeCresie, Organizer with Pitt County Schools.

The battle isn't over.  Other elementary schools will compete Friday and the two best teams go to a "final four" March Madness-like competition Saturday.

Pitt County middle school students also participated last month.  Organizers say they're working to expand the competition to high school students as well.
