Emerald Isle proposes to raise property taxes to expand bike paths

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -

One of our coastal towns is proposing to expand its bike paths.

The town of Emerald Isle wants to raise nearly $3 million to double the length of its bike paths on Coast Guard Road and Highway 58, said town manager Frank Rush.

It would involve raising property taxes by $40 to $100 per year for the next 10 years. That would cover the cost of expanding the two bike paths and some storm water improvement projects.

Tonight, the proposal is drawing mixed reactions.

"I would hope that people around here would think that it's worth it and think that that's a reasonable amount to pay for something that's going to last for years and years and it's something people really enjoy," said Emerald Isle resident Alicia Green.

"I think they should expand the bike path, but maybe they should find better ways to come up with the money," said Kamron Kinder, who skateboards on the bike paths.

The town will collect public input for the next month. Officials hope to have a decision by June 11.
