Dunn couple must repay $3 million in fraud case

Posted: Updated:
DUNN, N.C. -

A Dunn couple has been ordered to repay $3 million after pleading guilty to submitting fraudulent Medicaid claims.

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered John Alspaugh to more than three years in prison. His wife, Helen Blue Alspaugh, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison.

The couple pleaded guilty in January to tax fraud conspiracy. John Alspaugh also pleaded guilty to health care fraud.

The Alspaughs ran a home health care business that provided personal care services to the homebound. Prosecutors said they collected employment taxes but didn't pay that money to the Internal Revenue Service.

John Alspaugh also submitted $200,000 in Medicaid claims for clients who were dead, in prison or not receiving services.
