NC man accused of falsifying odometer readings

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The U.S. Department of Justice says a Raleigh man passed off used cars with false odometer readings in a scam covering four years.

A statement issued Friday said the department will prosecute Francis Marimo on two counts of odometer tampering. The department says he put lower-mileage odometers in used cars he bought online, then resold the vehicles.

The department says one of the vehicles was rolled back more than 100,000 miles.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and a special unit in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the case.  The Justice Department's Consumer Protection Branch will prosecute it.
