Two bills aimed at human trafficking in North Carolina introduced

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Two bills introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly aim to further define human trafficking laws in the state.

House Bill 855 would add minors who are human trafficking victims to the list of minors considered "abused juveniles."

It would make it law that a person charged with human trafficking could not use "mistaken age" and "consent of minor" as defenses.

It would require mandatory restitution for victims of human trafficking.

Under the bill, minors would not be prosecuted for prostitution.

Some people could have their prostitution conviction expunged.

A person with one prostitution conviction as the result of human trafficking could be eligible for victim's compensation.

The bill would also provide resources to make educations more aware of the issue and create a hotline for reporting suspected cases of human trafficking.

Senate Bill 122 would require someone convicted of human trafficking to register as a sex offender.

If the bills become law, they would go into effect Dec. 1.
