SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

The State Highway Patrol trooper who didn't see a woman's body inside a wrecked car before he had it towed away won't face any charges, said the Johnston County District Attorney.

Carolyn Ann Watkins' car was found in a ravine off Swift Creek Road by the State Highway Patrol and then towed. Her body was not discovered at the time by the investigating highway patrolman, Trooper M.D. Williams.

Al Parker, Watkins' son, said that an autopsy revealed that Watkins died of blunt force trauma in the accident and did not suffer.

Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle said that Williams will not face any criminal charges. Doyle said the incident was no longer a criminal matter with the findings of the autopsy.

Boyle also said charges would have been filed if evidence was found to show that Watkins suffered due to Williams negligence.

The State Highway Patrol is handling the status of Williams administratively.
