UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

A Unicoi County inmate is facing criminal charges for allegedly setting a jail cell on fire.

Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday jail officials said they smelled smoke and called the Erwin Municipal Fire Department.

The flames caused the sprinkler system to turn on - resulting in some flooding in the jail and in the downstairs offices, including the 911 center.

The fire department is charging jail inmate Jerry Blevins, 26, with felony arson, felony vandalism and 16 counts of felony reckless endangerment.

Fire Chief James Bailey says Blevins faces the reckless endangerment charges because inmates were in the cell block when the fire was started.
