ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Senator Bill Nelson said Friday that he wants to know whether the Boston marathon bombing suspects have affiliations with any "international terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda."

Nelson (D-FL) was asked about the Boston suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, by News Channel 8 after the senator took part in a news conference marking the anniversary of the BP oil spill.

"I want to know what was their motivation and if they had co-conspirators," Nelson said. "Were they supplied with people and technology and know-how as they built those bombs?"

Nelson also said one of the questions now will be, "Is this part of Al-Qaeda picking a soft target?"

"Remember, they had swept the marathon with dogs prior to the finish," he said. "These guys came in after the first runners had crossed and placed their bombs after the police and the dogs had swept. So they knew what they were doing."

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police in Watertown, MA Thursday night, while Dzhokhar escaped.
