TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

When the F.B.I. released photos on Thursday of "suspect number 1" and "suspect number 2" in the Boston marathon bombings, America went on high alert.

Overnight, the vague identities of the suspects appeared to come into focus.  Authorities say brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev killed an MIT police officer, and were involved in a shootout.  The shootout killed Tamerlan.  Dzhokar was apparently able to escape.

The brothers are native Chechen, but it's unclear if that is a motive or even a factor for the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

U.S.F. Professor Dr. Darrell Slider has studied Russia and its republics since the 1970's.  Dr. Slider says, "Chechnya is the most troubled region of Russia by far."

Dr. Slider says Chechnya is the only former republic that tried to break away from Russia in the 1990's.  The two wars that followed helped develop a generation of radicals.

Although there is no clear evidence at this time that either of the brothers is involved in radical movements, Dr. Slider says young men can often identify with movements in their native countries.

Dr. Slider says, "It's that identify of a Chechen to identify himself with this oppression that his people had suffered in Russia might make susceptible to other kinds of influences."
