RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Wake County couple accused of killing a Kinston woman nearly two years ago will be tried separately.

Wake County Judge Donald Stephens ruled Monday that 33-year-old Grant Ruffin Hayes and 40-year-old Amanda Perry Hayes should be tried separately.

Laura Jean Ackerson was the mother of two of Grant Hayes' children. Parts of Ackerson's body were found in a Texas creek in July 2011.

Amanda Hayes is to be tried next month. Grant Hayes is to stand trial in August.

An attorney representing Amanda Hayes has said in court documents that Grant Hayes intimidated her before and after her arrest.

Ackerson's body was found in a creek near the home of Amanda Hayes' sister.

Investigators say at least one of the Hayeses killed Ackerson and hacked her body into pieces.
