Dale Mabry Highway reopens after suspicious package reports in Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A tip about an unattended package closed all lanes on South Dale Mabry Highway between Bay to Bay Boulevard and San Juan Street Tuesday morning.

Tampa Police officers investigated the incident. They said a woman riding a bicycle spotted a package earlier under a US Postal Service box near Santiago Street West.

She called 911, a responding police officer notified TPD K9 unit and declared the package suspicious. Authorities evacuated several near-by homes and businesses in an abundance of caution.

K9 alerted on the package, and officers called the Regional Bomb Team to assess the situation, police said.

Janet Holt says an officer told them to leave and didn't give them time to pick up belongings or move cars.

Holt says she didn't mind, "Given the facts of everything that's happened in the last week, my first thought was, better safe than sorry."

The bomb team confirmed the package contained nothing but trash. It was addressed to the Tampa Bay Times. There was no return address. Police will now investigate who placed the package and what alerted the police dog.

Officers cleared the intersection. All lanes on South Dale Mabry Highway opened for traffic.

A short time later, a bomb threat to a downtown office building forced police to evacuate the building, forcing nearly 600 people out just after noon.

Bradley Panta, who works in the building, says he didn't mind, " Considering what just recently happened, I'm sure everybody is a little on edge, so I'd rather them have the search dogs come out and make sure everything is ok, than take anything for granted."

Police say they will investigate to find out what was behind both incidents.
