Wife of Democratic strategist dies after best man stabs NC couple, police say

The family of a woman who was stabbed in her North Raleigh home says Jamie Hahn has died.

A stabbing Monday evening left a prominent Raleigh political couple seriously injured and the best man from their wedding is charged in the incident.

Tealwood Place, and a man who was also a political strategist has been charged with the crime.

Tuesday evening, the husband, Nation Hahn -- who still wore a large bandage on his arm -- attended a prayer service for his wife of 4 years, Jamie Hahn, is an Orangeburg, SC native.

Both Hahns are politicals activist and the husband is a key manager at an NC public relations firm.

Jamie Hahn died early Wednesday morning, just after midnight.

Nation Hahn tweeted Wednesday, "I have no idea what I am going to do without (Jamie). She was my center, my rock and my soulmate."

A 911 call revealed Jamie Hahn was running down the street covered in blood after the stabbing and the couple were taken to WakeMed.

Nation Hahn has worked with the NC Sierra Club and  John Edwards for President.

Police have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Jonathan Broyhill, who records show worked with Jamie Hahn. A photo of the 3 is the "cover photo" on Jamie Hahn's Facebook page.

Police say Broyhill and the Hahns knew each other and WRAL reported Broyhill was Nation Hahn's best man at the couple's wedding  four years ago.

Broyhill was identified as a strategist for Jamie Hahn's firm when he made a campaign contribution to Walter Dalton's gubernatorial bid in September, according to campaign finance records posted on the State Board of Elections web site.

Jamie Hahn has a fundraising firm called Sky Blue Strategies and has worked for many Democratic campaigns, incudling for Rep. Brad Miller's election.

Nation Hahn is on the Board of the Pamlico Tar River Foundation. He also serves on the Z. Smith Reynolds Community Leadership Council, AIGA Raleigh Advisory Board and the UNC Chapel Hill Young Alumni Leadership Council.

Nation Hahn, is a UNC-Chapel Hill grad and served as Digital Director of the United Football League, before coming to Raleigh to work for the New Kind PR firm.

Yellow crime scene tape kept some neighbors from getting home from work Monday evening. 

"It's completely bizarre and my heart goes out to their family," neighbor Pamela Hung said. "It always seems to happen to people that don't deserve to have anything happen to them."

In a statement from the victims' families says Jamie is fighting for her life and they appreciate the support they have received.

"Jamie is a strong and courageous young woman and a bright light to us all. Pray for her," the family stated.

Raleigh Police say the crime is not believed to be a random act.

Broyhill has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He will be processed at the Wake County Jail when his medical condition permits.

Nation Hahn is the director of engagement at New Kind.
