CarolinaEast Medical Center celebrates major milestone

Posted: Updated:

A local hospital celebrated a major milestone today.

CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern turned 50 years old this week.

A spokeswoman said when the hospital opened in 1963, there were only 700 employees. Now there are three times as many employees and a medical center spanning four counties.

The CEO of the hospital spoke about how far the hospital has come in the last 50 years, and a chaplain gave a special blessing.

"Well, every year is special, but 50 years, that's half a century of caring. And we're looking forward to our next half century," said Megan McGarvey, CarolinaEast Medical Center spokeswoman.

McGarvey said when the hospital first opened, its budget was only $720,000.
