Hagan introduces financial literacy bill at Raleigh school

High school students nationwide will be offered a course in financial literacy before graduation, if Senator Kay Hagan has her way.

The North Carolina Democrat spoke to students at Raleigh's Leesville Road High School on Friday to announce the introduction of her Financial Literacy for Students Act.

If passed, the bill would provide financial incentives for states that offer courses on finances to their students.

Leesville students are already offered a course outlining financial basics. Hagan says she wants other public schools to follow Leesville's example so students have a basic knowledge of finance as they head to college and adulthood. She cited recent reports showing the amount of student loan debt nationwide has now surpassed levels of credit card debt.

"Right now, there's about 4 states in the nation that actually teach a whole semester on financial literacy," Hagan said. "The key, I think, is providing students with financial education before you graduate from high school.  Financial literacy is not rocket science.  We just haven't taught it in the past."
