Volunteers from the East help in West, Texas

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The devastating explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas happened more than a week ago, but the recovery effort is now in full swing.

Among the volunteers are several people from eastern North Carolina.

Today, 9 On Your Side talked via Skype with a Samaritan's Purse volunteer from Atlantic Beach.

"There should have been, in almost every home, some kind of injury, people standing on the front porch that should've been killed, someone sitting on the couch where the only window that didn't break and throw glass shards onto the opposite wall, stood intact. Miracle stories one after another. So yes, a lot of grief, but also a lot of thankfulness," said Jim Ault, Samaritan's Purse volunteer.

A few people from New Bern are also helping with the recovery effort and damage assessment. They arrived in West with the Samaritan's Purse disaster relief unit last week.
