Obama taps Charlotte mayor for transportation secretary spot

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

A North Carolina mayor may soon be headed to Washington.

President Obama nominated Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx to become the next transportation secretary Monday.

Foxx would replace Ray LaHood, who announced his resignation in January. LaHood has said he will remain in his post until a successor is confirmed.

Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention last year.

Foxx also helped expand the airport and has advocated for keeping it in Charlotte's hands.

As transportation secretary, he would have control over the FAA.
