IRS furloughs likely mean fewer audits

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

If there's a silver lining to the spending cuts in Washington, it's that you'll have a smaller chance of being audited this year.

The cuts are forcing thousands of employees at the IRS to be furloughed without pay for up to seven days.

And that means fewer auditors. Audits have already been on the decline due to budget cuts at the IRS over the last few years.

Last year the number of audits dropped 5 percent to about 1 and a half million.
