Pinellas County offers new summer program to students

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Cassandra Ventura-Riddick says finding ways to keep her two kids motivated is a challenge. One has Asperger's Syndrome, the other a learning disability.

"My second grader cries when he reads because he reads at a first grade level," Ventura-Riddick said.

She hopes a new Pinellas County summer program will keep her students engaged over the summer. It's called "Summer Bridge" and is for kindergarten through 12th grade. The free six week program provides more attention for the kids who need it the most.

"It won't just be more of the same," Pinellas County Superintendent Dr. Michael Grego said. "We want to engage students in a different way. We will have more lab experience and application experience."

Dr. Grego says it's all about "bridging the gap." Ventura-Riddick hopes her kids will start next school year ahead of the game.

"Hopefully now they won't forget the material over the summer," Ventura-Riddick said. "The reading will hopefully get them where they're supposed to be next year and not be behind everyone again when school starts."

The program runs June 17  through July 25. About 5,000 out of the 10,000 eligible students in Pinellas County are already registered. The deadline has been pushed back to Friday May 3. To find out more about Summer Bridge click here.
