CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A Marine assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion-East has been awarded the Silver Star Medal.

It's the third-highest combat award in the U.S. military.

Staff Sgt. Daniel W. Ridgeway received the award during a ceremony Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Ridgeway supervised a dismounted security patrol in Afghanistan whose mission was to clear a suspected enemy weapons cache site known to be laden with improvised explosive devices. Shortly after they began the mission, an IED struck Ridgeway's team member.

Ridgeway heroically cleared a 40-meter path to administer care to the wounded Marine. He then cleared a 100 by 100 meter landing zone to facilitate the medical evacuation of the casualty.

Following the evacuation, the squad found itself under enemy fire from multiple positions. Ridgeway once again acted heroically, clearing five additional IEDs while under direct fire.
