3rd Annual Carolina Strawberry Festival coming to Wallace

Posted: Updated:
WALLACE, N.C. -

It's spring which means it's time to enjoy delicious strawberries!  The Carolina Strawberry Festival is coming up next weekend.

On May 10th and 11th, North Carolinians will descend on the town of Wallace to enjoy a weekend full of strawberry-themed fun.

There will be a strawberry recipe contest, a 5K race, as well as the Little and Mini Miss Strawberry Pageant.

The Band of Oz and Jim Quick & the Coastline Band will perform throughout the two-day festival.

Mayor Charley Farrior and Town Manager Matt Livingston dropped by Morning Edition to talk about the event that has deep roots in Wallace dating back to the early 1900's.

"Wallace at that time was known as the world's largest strawberry exchange," said Farrior.  "It was a very, very important part of our economy.  Folks back in those days, after the berries were picked, always wanted to celebrate so they'd have a strawberry festival."

Coming up this weekend on May 3rd and 4th in Vanceboro, it's the Annual Vanceboro Strawberry Festival and Rescue Day.  It's happening at Vanceboro-Farm Life Elementary School.  There will be live entertainment, carnival rides and demonstrations by the rescue squad.
