GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Women gathered Wednesday in Greenville for the Women for Women annual Power of the Purse Luncheon at the Convention Center.

Actress and comedian Vicki Lawrence delivered today's keynote address at the luncheon.

Lawrence, an Emmy Award winner, starred alongside Carol Burnett on the Carol Burnett Show and headlined her own sitcom, Mama's Family. She's also hosted her own daytime game show, talk show, and starred in numerous stage productions.

At the event, Lawrence told the hundreds of women in attendance stories about working with Burnett, her personal struggles and the importance of giving back through philanthropic work.

"I love bonding with women and my main message to women is that we should all laugh to get through it all," Lawrence told 9 On Your Side's Katie Banks before the event. "They of course are an incredible organization and they give back to the community, and I think that's what women are so good at - giving."

Women for Women is a non-profit organization made up of women dedicated to becoming effective philanthropists through the power of giving.

"Our goal is to bring hope, change and a brighter future to the women and girls of Pitt County," says Vonda Robinson, an organization board member. "And we do that every year by raising money and then giving it out in grants."

The organization has existed for only seven years and has already donated more than $300,000 to deserving women. Membership to Women for Women costs an annual fee of $100-$1,000 and is open to any woman who has a heartfelt desire to give back and to make a lasting impact on the lives of women and young girls in the community.
