Hundreds of volunteers recognized in annual celebration

Posted: Updated:

In Craven County, hundreds of volunteers got a big thank you Wednesday for all the hard work they do.

Today was the 11th Annual Volunteer Celebration by Coastal Community Action, a non-profit aimed at addressing poverty and senior citizen issues. They have more than 300 volunteers who help out with everything from driving the elderly to doctor's appointments and reading to children.

Volunteers do their work in eight counties, including Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico.

They told 9 On Your Side it's nice to be appreciated.

"It's been wonderful. The food has been nice, the participation has been real good, we had so many that showed up today. It's been a very, enjoying good time," said Mary Murphy-Ollision, Coastal Community Action volunteer.

Several volunteers received awards, including the Governor's Award, President's Award, and Volunteer of the Year Award.
