Detectives apprehended a fleeing drug felon after a brief foot chase.

Deputies with the Carteret County Sheriff's Office said they arrested and charged 30-year-old Samuel McCrae Newkirk of Beaufort with Trafficking in Cocaine by Possession (1 count), Trafficking in Cocaine by Transportation (1 count), Felony Maintaining a Vehicle (1 count), Resist, Obstruct and Delay (1 count), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (1 count).

It all started after detectives said they tried to conduct a traffic stop of Newkirk's vehicle in the North River community. Deputies said Newkirk pulled into the driveway of his home, left his vehicle running and fled from the scene. He allegedly dropped a large quantity of crack cocaine as he got out of his vehicle.

Detectives gave chase and caught up with him in a wooded area not too far away. They said they seized 40 grams of crack cocaine, 8 grams of powder cocaine and digital scales.

Newkirk was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.
