GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The numbers are coming in from the 2013 Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Letter carriers did double duty Saturday, delivering the mail and picking up food donations.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is reporting preliminary estimates for Saturday's collection. Officials say they collected about 23,000 pounds of food from the Greenville area.

An estimated total from the five areas that collect for the food bank is more than 395,000 pounds of food. A final count will be verified at postal branches over the next week.

If you're looking for a way to give back to the community, make sure you take part in the 21st Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On Saturday, May 11th, letter carriers across Greenville will perform double duty on their routes, delivering the mail and collecting food for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.  All you have to do is place bags filled with nonperishable food items at your mailbox, and your letter carrier will pick them up.

It's part of Campbell's Soup Company's nationwide effort where more than 10,000 communities are participating to help the 50 million Americans living at risk of hunger.

Examples of non-perishable food items you can leave at your mailbox include: peanut butter; canned soup; canned meats and fish; canned vegetables, fruits, and juices; boxed goods such as cereal; and pasta and rice.
