Lost Colony among 2013 Tony Honors recipients

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The Lost Colony will be a recipient of the 2013 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre.

They'll be presented at the Tony Eve Coctail Party on June 8th.

The Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre were first established in 1990. The awards are presented annually to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but aren't eligible in any of the Tony Award categories.

The Lost Colony is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning Paul Green that's a North Carolina performing arts institution.  It started in July 1937 and is one of the last of the Federal Theatre Projects. The play tells the story of the first English colonists that vanished from their settlement. Artisits like Joe Layton to Andy Griffth to Lynn Redgrave and Steve Kazee have spent their summers performing in the production.

The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, in Manteo, will celebrate its 76th anniversary in 2013.

The 2013 Tony Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, June 9th on CBS and WNCT-TV Channel 9.
