Onslow County students take a stand against bullying

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

In Onslow County, some middle school kids are taking a stand against bullying.

Students at Southwest Middle School, near Jacksonville, put on a bullying awareness assembly Friday afternoon.

They sang, danced, read poems, and spoke from personal experience about the need for bullying to stop.

This is the third year for the event, which was organized and run entirely by the students. One of those students says she's seen bullying too many times.

"I've seen people like if someone stands out in a crowd or is different, they pick on them for their differences. If their hair is not exactly like the popular people, or they wear different clothes, they take advantage of it." Madison Barbee, a student organizer in the 8th grade.

Students also received anti-bullying bracelets and recited a pledge to stand up to bullying.
