NEW BERN, N.C. -

Dozens of women in eastern North Carolina put their construction skills to the test at the Habitat for Humanity's National Women Build Week in New Bern.

Women Build Week is a national initiative to encourage woman to come out and learn about home construction and get involved the organization.

"It's great; because, a lot of them have never tried to do some of the stuff that we asked them to do are willing to come out and learn from my site manager and take the workshop at Lowe's and learn how to do something completely different and get involved."

The women helped landscape and paint a home in New Bern. Homeowner, Chau Nguyen and her father also joined in on the effort to put the finishing touches on the home. Nguyen and the women say it's about helping others and learning useful skills.

"It gives you confidence that say if I wanted to tackle something at home, I can do it, and also that I can help someone else," said volunteer and board member Tiffany Dove.

"Very beautiful day for the lady, work and lady cleaned the house, so it's very awesome," said Nguyen

Nguyen and her family received the keys to their new home Saturday afternoon.

Woman's Build Week runs through May 12th. Contact your local habitat for humanity office to find out how to participate.
