Winterville Police help kids stay safe on their bikes

WINTERVILLE, N.C. -

Kids and their parents put their feet to the bicycle pedals, as part of the Winterville Police Department's annual bicycle safety program.

Officers showed kids how to properly ride a bike and educated about how to stay safe on while riding on the roads.

Kids pedaled through an obstacle course and got their bikes checked out and repaired by a local bike company to make sure they were safe.

When they finished the program, every kid received a new helmet and lunch.

Winterville police say it's all about keeping the kids safe on the road.

"We get local community involved. Try and get them out and say hey we need to get these kids out here and educate them on the proper techniques of riding on the road, the proper way to ride on the roads; so, we can cut down casualties and anything else where they're falling or anything else," Larry Dobra of Winterville Police Department.

Dobra says the police department is working with local schools to get more kids and their parents to participate in the bike safety program.
