Posted: Updated:

A Cherry Point Marine was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck over the weekend.

Troopers said it happened along Highway 24 in Newport around 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Lawmen said 72-year-old Lou Cacal pulled out of a gas station and hit 21-year-old David Sandmeyer's motorcycle as he was traveling east.

Troopers said Cacal's pickup truck t-boned the motorcycle. Sandmeyer died at the scene.

Trooper Melby told 9 On Your Side Lou Cacal had been waiting for a funeral procession to pass and says he didn't see the motorcycle coming.

Charges are pending in this case.
