Tarpon Springs HS student brings loaded gun to campus

Posted: Updated:
TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

A Tarpon Springs 11th-grader is facing charges of bringing a loaded gun to school Monday morning, police said.

Dre'Tonio Maitez Greer, 16, told officials he recently found the .32 calliber gun and brought it to school for protection.

Around 8 a.m., school resource officers, acting on an anonymous tip, removed Greer from his class. While talking with police, Greer admitted to having the firearm.

Investigators said the gun had three rounds in the magazine and a serial number that had been filed off. There were no rounds in the chamber, according to police.

Greer told authorities he brought the firearm on campus because of problems he was having outside of school with a few other students at the school.

There were no threats made at any-time on the campus located at 1411 Gulf Rd., and school activity was never disrupted.

Greer is facing charges of possessing a firearm on school grounds and carrying a concealed firearm, both felonies.
