Fishermen speaking out against controversial bill

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -

Some local fishermen are in Raleigh speaking out against a controversial bill they believe would threaten their livelihood.

Dozens of people from the Carteret County Fishermen's Association took a bus from Beaufort to the state capital Monday morning. They went to speak to lawmakers at a public hearing on House Bill 983.

The bill would designate three species of fish, speckled trout, red drum, and striped bass, as gamefish.

It would also make it illegal for people to buy or sell these fish, with a few exceptions.

"We're going up there for the help all the fishermen that do fish for this particular species to make it available for the citizens in this state to eat, which if they make a gamefish out of it, it'll never be in a seafood market again," said Aron Styron, Jr., commercial fisherman.

The bill would make it so the only legal way to catch those fish in certain areas is by hook-and-line.
