Officers, first responders bike 62 miles to honor fallen state troopers

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -

Officers and other first responders biked 62 miles to honor state troopers who've died in the line of duty.

They chose 62 because that's how many Highway Patrol troopers have died on duty since the agency started in 1929.

Last fall, 12-year Highway Patrol veteran Bobby DeMuth died when a car slammed into him on U.S. 64 in Rocky Mount.

Troopers say a 40-year-old from Williamston swerved into DeMuth.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and cry my heart out for him, honey. Every day. Just every day. I think about him every day. He died a hero. He died doing what he loves to do," said Mildred Karachun, Trooper DeMuth's mother.
