Police: ATM armed robbery never happened

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Greenville Police say they've obtained a search warrant for a man who reported being robbed at an ATM earlier this month.

Police say 44-year-old James Godwin initially told police he was robbed by two armed men at an ATM near the intersection of Stantonsburg Rd. and Memorial Drive. The robbery was reported around 1:30 a.m. on May 1.

Detectives are now charging Godwin with making a false report to police. Evidence gathered by Major Crimes Unit Detective J.A. Baxter shows no robbery ever happened.

Police tell us Godwin was advised of the charges against him and had agreed to surrender Monday, but didn't show up.

Greenville Police are still investigating four other robberies reported the same night as this one. If you have any information, Call CrimeStoppers at 252-758-7777.
