Pinellas School District recommends P. E. three times a week

Posted: Updated:

The state mandates schools provide 150 minutes of P. E. a week. Instead of 30 minutes a day of P. E, some schools will go to 50 minutes 3x times a week.

Superintendent Dr. Michael A. Grego said he agrees that P. E. is important, it's just a matter of trying to fit all the requirements in a school day. " We're still trying to, in 61/2 hours, to teach what parents expect and P. E. is one of them," said Grego.

But Dr.Chrisoula Kiriazis believes daily physical activity improves learning and behavior. " I think the teachers would be happier, the children will perform better and it sends good message that physical education is an essential part of good health," said Dr. Chrisoula Kiriazis. She wrote a book about raising healthy kids. She and the publisher of Good Living Magazine , voiced their concerns before the School Board today.

"Changing a schedule and sacrificing physical activity may not be the best choice. We'd like them to consider some other alternatives in scheduling," Pam Suttle publisher, Good LIving Magazine. Suttle encourages parents, like Angela Kelly, to talk to their principals. "They need to have as much exercise as they can because nowadays they just go home sit down and watch video games, watch TV and no interaction outside," said Kelly.

It's up to each principal to make a decision on P. E. scheduling for their own school. They have to turn that decision in by the end of the month
