Senate Republicans unveil proposed NC tax overhaul

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Senate Republicans announced details of their proposed tax code overhaul Tuesday.

They want to expand the sales tax in North Carolina while cutting the income tax. They said it'll energize the economy.

Senate leader Phil Berger said the plan would cut total taxes by more than a billion dollars and lower the income tax over the next 3-years.

But the overhaul would make our sales tax base one of the broadest in the country.

Right now, you have to pay sales tax on about 30 different services. The proposal calls for adding another 100 or so services to the list, such as haircuts and massages.
