Two New Bern aldermen launch mayoral campaigns

Posted: Updated:

Two city aldermen are running for mayor.

First ward alderman Sabrina Bengel and third ward alderman Dennis Bucher made the announcement last week.

The two say they've been friends for last 11 years, but now they'll be political opponents as they compete for the same job.

"I told her very simply I hope that I beat her because I think I will be better equipped to be mayor, but we will do our best to remain friends as we go through this process," said Bucher. "And if she wins, it won't make me mad. I'll be happy for her."

They're both Republicans and both say economic development is one of their main goals. They're promising to run a clean campaign.

"I can't respect anybody more than I respect Denny Bucher. He is a faithful Christian, he's a great man, and he's been a mentor to me," said Bengel. "Right now I feel I'm the best person to step up. I have the most experience and nobody knows this community any better than I do."

Sixth ward alderman Dana Outlaw is also considering a run for mayor. But he says it's too soon to make an announcement.

"That's just energy you could spend fixing drainage and lowering electric rates in New Bern instead of campaigning," said Outlaw.

The candidates' filing date is July 8. The mayoral election is October 8.

Current New Bern mayor Lee Bettis, charged Monday with DWI and two other violations, announced in February he will not seek a second-term.
