PCC nurse pinned by the one she saved

Posted: Updated:

A new line of nurses are ready to pursue their passion for caring for others. Pitt Community College honored their new nursing graduates with a formal pinning ceremony Tuesday night.

If you ask them they'll tell you it's what they're called to do.

The group stood as one, passed candles, and received a pin for their accomplishments.

96 graduates participated in the age old tradition, but it was extra special for one nurse who got her pin from a very thankful friend.

Her name is Chelsea Gibbons.

"I was just hanging out in the water, floating around when I heard an accident," recalled Gibbons.

It was Fourth of July weekend, and Duke University football player, Blair Holliday was in a bad Jet Ski accident.

"I could tell by the commotion that something had happened so I was like well maybe I can help," she said.

She was just a nursing student at the time and happened to be at the same lake, when she saw Blair.

"His whole body was just limp," she explained.

She says immediately, adrenaline kicked in. It was time to put what she had learned to the test.

"As I was swimming, I was trying to tell them: just lay them down keep him flat don't move his head," she said.

Gibbons gave Holliday CPR which kept his heart pumping.

Blair was in a coma, but after a long road of recovery, he pulled through.

"Honestly I don't remember anything," he said. "She was there at the right moment. It's just a gift from God honestly that she was there, and knew what to do."

And who better to give Gibbons her pin, than the man whose life she saved.

"It was pretty much the happiest ending you can think of because he's doing great so it was like the best outcome you could have wanted," said Gibbons.

The two still keep a very close relationship.

Congratulations to all the nursing graduates. 9 On Your Side wishes you all the best!
