A Durham man has been arrested after leading authorities in a tri-county police chase through Sampson, Johnston and Wake counties.

Sampson County 911 center received a call about a burglary in process at Quality Farm Equipment on Pugh Road in Clinton.

The suspect left the scene and a citizen began following the suspect until a Clinton Police officer was able to intercept. The officer tried to stop the suspect, but he refused to stop.

The Clinton Police Department stopped pursuing the suspect and then Sampson County Sheriff's Office took over.  Newton Grove police officers and Johnston County and Wake County Sheriff's deputies also joined the pursuit as the suspect made his way through Johnston and Wake counties.

Authorities were eventually able to catch the suspect, Barry Helms of Durham, in Wake County.

Helms has been charged with one count of burglary and forcible entry, one count of resisting arrest and two counts of aggravated assault of an officer.

Helms was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $36,000 bond.
