Special episode to honor Y&R icon Jeanne Cooper

LOS ANGELES -

Tuesday at 12:30, Young & the Restless cast members, family and friends will gather for a special tribute episode celebrating  the life of Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine Chancellor.

The Young and the Restless grand dame passed away May 8.

Cooper's son Corbin Bernsen, best known for playing Arnie Becker on L.A. Law, made the announcment on various social networking platforms.

A statement on Twitter from Bernsen read, "Mom passed this morning. She was in peace and without fear. U all have been incredible in your love. In her name share it 2 day with others."

Cooper was best known for her nearly 40-year run on Y&R, which launched in 1973. Her career began in the 1950s with a role in the Western The Redhead from Wyoming. She also appeared in ABC's Crossroads, NBC's Tales of Wells Fargo and CBS' Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater as well as dramas such as The Adventures of Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Wagon Train, plus multiple appearances on Perry Mason, The Big Valley and Ironside.

Over the years, her character battled alcoholism, and outlived four husbands. She had countless on-screen fights. Cooper even played two different characters on the show, Katherine and her look-alike, Marge.

Cooper also suggested to network executives that she and Katherine should get a facelift on the show, and it was written into the storyline.

Cooper says she and the show enjoyed a long successful run because viewers could relate to the stories.

Cooper received 10 Daytime Emmy nominations, winning in 2008 and earning a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. She also earned two Primetime Emmy nods, including for her turn as son Corbin's L.A. Law mother.

She  took a brief medical leave from Y&R in October 2011. She was temporarily recast with Michael Learned (The Waltons).

The actress is survived by her three children, Corbin, Colin and Caren.

Cooper was 84.
