PORTSMOUTH, Va. -

The Coast Guard rescued a man from a sailboat east of Kitty Hawk on Wednesday.

Officials said the 72-year-old Trevor Wilson of Great Britain requested a medevac from the 24-foot sailboat around 9 a.m.

Watchstanders were first alerted when Wilson activated his 406 megahertz emergency position indicating radio beacon around 6 a.m. They deployed an aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to search for Wilson.

Wilson told the aircrew he'd been unconscious for seven hours and thought he might have fallen and hit his head.

A rescue swimmer took Wilson off the sailboat Emma and he was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
