ABERDEEN, N.C. -

A Moore County middle school teacher was arrested and charged Wednesday with having an improper relationship with a student.

Gregory Kurt Smith, 50, of Cameron, N.C., is charged with sex offenses involving a student. Smith taught social studies at Southern Middle School.

A spokesman for the school system says the student involved in the charges attended a different school in the Moore County Schools system.

An incident report for Moore County Schools Police indicate the student is a 17-year-old girl who attends Pinecrest High School.

"An occurrence such as this deeply affects both our school system and our community," Moore County Schools spokesman Tim Lussier said. "It is our intent to ensure that the involved student, as well as students at Southern Middle School, have counselors available to provide them with a sense of normalcy through these final weeks of the school year."

Lanier says Smith is no longer an employee of Southern Middle School effective May 8.
