JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Johnson City Schools suspends a teacher for three days without pay after the teacher allegedly bit a student.

A document released by Johnson City Schools details the investigation process of the teacher and students involved.  That document states a tenured Indian Trail Intermediate School teacher allegedly bit a student for answering a question incorrectly.  The document states the teacher was actually suspended on May 1st for the alleged action and the student reported the incident on March 21st.

The document also included a letter from Johnson City School Superintendent Richard Bales to the teacher.  That letter states "physical contact of this type with any student will not be tolerated."

School investigations on the incident were detailed in the document as well.  The investigations revealed the teacher in question admitted to putting her mouth on the student's arm, but said it was a joke and she did not bite down.  Three other students stated during the investigation that the teacher was joking and the student allegedly bitten giggled after the teacher's action.  However, a fourth student said the child was afraid and did not want to go back to the class.

Lee Patterson, Human Resource Director and Legal Council for Johnson City Schools said this is the first offense for the nearly 18 year teacher of the school system.

"There are no other disciplinary actions noted in her personal file and I am not aware of any others," said Lee Patterson.

Patterson says the Indian Trail Intermediate School Principal Dave Peccia permanently removed the student from the teacher's classroom.

"The principle just thought that was the appropriate thing to do for all parties concerned," said Patterson.

Patterson says to her knowledge this is the first 3 day suspension in the school system.
